THE EXPERIENCE

Saigon, South Africa’s first Vietnamese restaurant, was founded by Ernst Fischer in 1997. From the very first dish created by Head Chef Van My to today’s carefully curated menu, we have remained true to the authenticity and creativity that defined our beginnings.

For more than two decades, we’ve been proud to share unforgettable dining experiences with our guests. Thank you for being part of our journey and for your continued support as we continue to grow in Cape Town.

CHEF VAN MY

Born in Saigon, Chef Van My’s journey began in his family-owned restaurants, with regional Vietnamese training sparked by his grandmother. In 1987 he moved to Germany to train in Western and Chinese cuisines, launching his international career. Back in Saigon, he worked at Omni Saigon Hotel, then in Hong Kong, Singapore, and New York. In 1997 he moved to Cape Town with his wife Kim Anh to establish Saigon Vietnamese Restaurant—the first Vietnamese eatery in South Africa. Today, as co-owner, he blends traditional Vietnamese flavours with innovative modern Asian influences.

We've been coming to Saigon for 26 years and have always had the most delicious food! Make sure you book... it's very popular.

Food was good, service was fast and efficient. Towards the end of our meal, one of the guests found a small piece of plastic in her dish. We informed the waiter, and they hastily packed us a replacement, free of charge. Mistakes happen, so we were happy with the outcome. But then, when the bill came, Saigon said they have covered our bill, as an apology for the piece of plastic. That was truly way beyond what we expected, and incredibly generous. It is rare to find a restaurant that values customer service so highly.

I highly recommend Saigon Vietnamese Restaurant, a Kloof Street favourite that has been delighting diners since 1997. It’s one of those rare Cape Town spots that consistently delivers and never disappoints. The menu offers a wide variety of absolutely delicious Vietnamese dishes, and the ambience strikes a perfect balance between vibrant and relaxed. The staff are friendly, efficient, and professional, which adds to the overall experience. As it’s a very popular restaurant, booking is essential—especially over weekends. Parking can be a bit tricky in the area, with limited on-site options, so it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot.
