THE EXPERIENCE
Saigon, South Africa’s first Vietnamese restaurant, was founded by Ernst Fischer in 1997. From the very first dish created by Head Chef Van My to today’s carefully curated menu, we have remained true to the authenticity and creativity that defined our beginnings.

CHEF VAN MY
Born in Saigon, Chef Van My’s journey began in his family-owned restaurants, with regional Vietnamese training sparked by his grandmother. In 1987 he moved to Germany to train in Western and Chinese cuisines, launching his international career. Back in Saigon, he worked at Omni Saigon Hotel, then in Hong Kong, Singapore, and New York. In 1997 he moved to Cape Town with his wife Kim Anh to establish Saigon Vietnamese Restaurant—the first Vietnamese eatery in South Africa. Today, as co-owner, he blends traditional Vietnamese flavours with innovative modern Asian influences.

Saigon offers a vibrant fusion of modern Vietnamese and Asian cuisine infused with traditional flavours. Our menu features iconic dishes alongside seasonal specials, showcasing Chef My's signature creations, Pho with beef short rib, roast duck, crispy ginger fish, slow-roasted ribs, and Nikkei lamb chops. In addition, we offer an innovative selection of premium sushi and fresh dumplings.
